Bird taxonomic and functional responses to land abandonment in wood-pastures

چکیده
Wood-pastures are socio-ecological systems covering vast areas in Europe. Although used for grazing and production of various forest goods, wood-pastures harbour a rich biodiversity usually considered as High Nature Value Farmlands. However, socio-economic pressures driving the transformation these valuable landscapes from multi-functional, heterogeneous habitats to homogeneous through either intensification or land abandonment. We investigated how changes management intensity influence taxonomic diversity, functional diversity composition birds using generalized linear models. In contrast decreased significantly towards shrub-dominated less related abandonment and/or understory practices. Grassland generalist species, associated guilds such granivores, ground-nesters ground-foragers almost absent managed areas. On other hand, favour particularly understory/canopy foragers arboreal nesters, although guild is still well-represented actively managed, Our results indicate wood-pasture affects prevalence grassland leading loss potentially reduced ecosystem functioning. suggest non-intensive, active needed maintain habitat heterogeneity canopy openness, enhancing trait wood-pastures.

Does land abandonment decrease species richness and abundance of plants and animals in Mediterranean pastures, arable lands and permanent croplands?
Background: Obscured by the more prevalent discussion of intensification and expansion of agricultural land, the impacts of the abandonment of many grasslands and croplands of the world in recent decades have received limited attention in the literature. Land abandonment is a common phenomenon in the Mediterranean Basin, a global biodiversity hotspot, but little is known about the impacts of th...

Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of...
متن کاملNeighborhood Responses to Abandonment & Gentrification : A
This thesis studies how the various neighborhood organizations and the residents of a community in the City of New York, the Lower East Side, have been addressing the pressures of Abandonment in the 1970s and Gentrification in the 1980s. Case studies of neighborhood organized programs to mitigate the impact of abandonment and gentrification are studied to analyze the dynamics of the community. ...
متن کاملPredicting bee community responses to land-use changes: Effects of geographic and taxonomic biases
Land-use change and intensification threaten bee populations worldwide, imperilling pollination services. Global models are needed to better characterise, project, and mitigate bees' responses to these human impacts. The available data are, however, geographically and taxonomically unrepresentative; most data are from North America and Western Europe, overrepresenting bumblebees and raising con...
متن کاملGrassland bird responses to land management in the largest remaining tallgrass prairie.
Extensive habitat loss and changing agricultural practices have caused widespread declines in grassland birds throughout North America. The Flint Hills of Kansas and Oklahoma--the largest remaining tallgrass prairie--is important for grassland bird conservation despite supporting a major cattle industry. In 2004 and 2005, we assessed the community, population, and demographic responses of grass...
